KUMBATIA: safety and empowerment for young mothers & their babies

DONATE

Our
Mission

Kumbatia is a non-profit organization that provides children from the slums with safety, nutrition, and education. We work to empower young, single mothers who are returning to work or school after giving birth. By providing free childcare we ensure that women can get an education, or work to provide for their families, knowing that their children are safe, loved, and well cared for.

Our Focus

We help children, families, and communities break the cycle of poverty by empowering people of all ages to dream, aspire and achieve.

SAFETY

At Kumbatia we work to find the most at-risk children and ensure that they are safe and off the streets. By providing free childcare, older children are able to go to school rather than attend to their younger siblings, young mothers are able to finish their education, and all parents are able to work so they may support their families without living in fear that their child will no longer be there when they return home.

EDUCATION

At Kumbatia we believe that education is power. By providing a nonprofit daycare, we allow young mothers (often 12-15 years old) to return to school, knowing that their children are safe. When the children at Kumbatia turn 3 we find them sponsors and pay for them to go to school. Check out our sponsorship page to see how just $35 a month can provide an education for a child.

EMPOWERMENT

We are working with local women through fair trade practices to implement programs that encourage sustainability and growth. We partner with international businesses to sell products such as clothes, blankets, and jewelry made by the women of Mshomoroni. The proceeds from the items sold come back to the women as well as to Kumbatia to support their children both at home and at the daycare.
